This research project was a quantitative ex post facto study. A matched participant-control group design was utilized, which helped to determine whether Restorative Justice (RJ) was an effective alternative for traditional Western justice practices among juvenile offenders in Missouri. RJ is a form of holding offenders accountable by focusing on the impact of the harmful behavior and collaboratively working to repair the harm caused by the criminal behavior. Overall, the results of the study indicated that RJ was at least as effective and in most cases more effective than traditional justice practices. Youth in the RJ group recidivated at lower rates than the comparison group youth. The RJ group lasted significantly longer than the comparison group before committing a new offense. The RJ youth demonstrated lower recidivism rates for all crime types, except property damage crimes. In the latter case, RJ was equally effective as the traditional justice system. RJ appears to be effective with both genders and across different ethnicities. While all ages tended to perform better in the RJ group, 11 and 12 year-olds tended to benefit the most from RJ. It was concluded that overall RJ was more effective in lowering recidivism rates when compared to the traditional justice system. Further discussion of the results and implications for theory, practice, and future research are discussed.
