There has been a significant amount of research on the topic of emotional intelligence within the workplace. Research has shown that one of the most common reasons that projects fail in organizations or businesses is the lack of competence by the project manager or leader in managing their subordinates. Currently, there are two leading methods in the assessment of emotional intelligence, the ability model and the mixed model. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of a Mixed Model measure of emotional intelligence called the Developing Emotion Competency Questionnaire (DECQ). A confirmatory factor analysis was utilized to determine the best fit of the factor structure of the Developing Emotional Competency Questionnaire. The internal consistency of the five factors of this measure was measured, along with an ANOVA and MANOVA analysis that explored differences in five factor skills between the executive and non-executive groups. Further analysis of the data also looked at gender differences between and within the two groups. A 25 factor structure was found to be the best fit when looking at the DECQ's construct of Emotional Intelligence. The Manager/Executive group rated themselves higher in Social Awareness than the Non-Manager/Non-Executive group. Female participants overall rated themselves higher on four out of five of the DECQ's five factors. Discussion of the findings and implications for future research are discussed further.
