Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2014.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is considered to be one of the most debilitating of the anxiety disorders (Fornaro, Gabrielli, Albano, Fornaro, & Rizatto, 2009), and often severely affects an individual's quality of life, daily functioning, and is associated with serious psychiatric comorbidities (Franklin & Foa, 2011). While it is clear that effective treatment approaches for adults with OCD are necessary, the literature base on efficacious OCD treatment needs to be updated and improved upon. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is considered to be the most effective "gold standard" treatment available for OCD, however research establishing its efficacy was largely conducted in the 1980s (Rowa. Antony, & Swinson, 2007). Recent research has also supported application of mindfulness techniques in the treatment of anxiety (Singh, Wahler, Winton, & Adkins, 2004), and researchers such as Fairfax (2008) assert that integrating mindfulness techniques may actually enhance the efficacy of ERP.

In order to update the literature base and explore the efficacy of treatment utilizing both ERP and mindfulness exercises, the current study examined archival pre-treatment and post-treatment data of participants who received Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), specifically involving ERP and mindfulness techniques, as a treatment for OCD. Results demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in participant scores after receiving the treatment. The study's use of archival data involved varying numbers of treatment sessions for participants before collecting post-treatment data, necessitating an analysis to control for the effects of time. Results indicated that the number of treatment sessions was unrelated to the significant decrease in OCD symptomatology after the treatment. While the small sample size used in the current study limited the external validity and generalizability of these results to other adults with OCD, they do support continuing to examine the efficacy of integrated ERP and mindfulness techniques in future research.
