Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2014.
This qualitative research study explored the subjective experience of women committed to establishing a career in the mental health field and their experience of becoming and being stepmothers. Nine participants who completed a semi-structured interview and a demographic questionnaire provided insight regarding the proposed phenomenon. The sample consisted of nine graduate students, with ages ranging from 26--32. Data was analyzed utilizing the constant comparative method. The analysis resulted in twelve themes, which included two subthemes and were organized under four categories. The categories included: 1) experiences with combining career pursuits and stepmotherhood; 2) impact on self, school, and professional life; 3) priorities, decisions, and outcomes; and 4) utilizing clinical knowledge, insight, strategies, and tools. The study found that with two separate systems operating (school/work & family) simultaneously, these women experienced a negative impact on their emotional well-being during their transition to balancing their professional development and stepmothering role. As these women strived to succeed in both systems, sacrifices in both family time and career pursuits were made. In finding a rhythm, these women discovered the importance of managing their priorities, utilizing relational support, and engaging in self-care. Additionally, the results showed the positive influences of their educational background on their stepmothering role, which ultimately contributed to their evolving stepfamilial system. Furthermore, this study offers additional knowledge surrounding the unique and complex experiences of these women and the experienced phenomenon. Many of the results were interpreted using systems theoretical concepts. Clinical implications, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research are provided.
