Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2014.
Previous research has shown that nursing faculty experience high levels of stress due high teaching loads, committee responsibilities, long office hours, and research requirements. Additional research has shown that employee wellness programs can be used to prevent work-related illness and injury. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the degree to which nursing faculty participate in employer-sponsored wellness programs. The purpose of this study was to explore why nursing faculty in a Pacific northwestern university do or do not participate in employee wellness programs, to identify factors that lead to participation, and to identify possible barriers to participation. Pender's health promotion model and Ajzen's theory of planned behavior were used as the key theoretical foundations for this study. The research question explored the lived experiences of full-time nursing faculty who have access to employee wellness programs. The study was conducted using a phenomenological approach with purposive sampling. Semistructured interviews with 13 nursing faculty from 2 nursing education programs were completed. Moustakas' thematic analytic approach was used to analyze the data. Results indicated that nursing faculty believe employee wellness programs are beneficial, but want them to be personally relevant. Nursing faculty valued socialization as an important benefit. Outside influences, such as job demands and convenience, impacted nursing faculty participation in employee wellness programs. Results from this study could be used to promote social change by providing nursing faculty with information that may increase their participation in employee wellness programs, resulting in decreased work-related stress experienced by nursing faculty.
