Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northern Illinois University, 2012.
The current study investigated the relationship between childhood exposure to domestic violence, specifically receipt of childhood physical abuse (CPA) and witnessing parental Intimate Partner Violence (PIPV), and autonomic nervous system (ANS) response to stress. Sixty-nine male college students from the Psychology 102 subject pool participated. Of these, 32 endorsed having received some form of CPA leaving a mark (e.g., bruises, welts, burns) and/or having witnessed at least one incident of physical aggression between parents, and 31 endorsed no history of either. Participants were presented with 6 three-minute audio recordings, 3 featuring a crying infant and 3 featuring a car horn. Participants also completed a computer version of the Stroop task between car horn recordings. Heart rate and skin conductance were recorded, and IPV perpetration was assessed via the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2). It was hypothesized that participants in the history of abuse group would exhibit a failure to habituate on autonomic measures compared to those in the no history of violence group. Additional hypotheses stated that participants demonstrating a failure to habituate would also demonstrate more impulsivity (as measured by the Stroop task) and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration, with impulsivity mediating the relationship between failure to return and impulsivity. Chronicity of exposure and overall ANS arousal levels were explored as factors as well. Analyses of variance (ANOVAS) were conducted to examine differences between groups for mean heart rate (MHR) and mean skin conductance level (MSCL). ANOVAS and Chi-Square tests were conducted to test remaining hypotheses and research questions. No differences were found to support failure to habituate. Likewise, neither of the other relationships examined was found to be significant, including those involving chronicity of exposure or overall ANS arousal level. In discussing the results, a review of recent research published since data collection commenced on this study suggests that gender may be an important variable in exploring the impact of exposure to domestic violence on ANS development, and that males may exhibit arousal patterns directly opposite than what may be predicted by studies with females.
