Thesis (M.A.)--Prescott College, 2013.
Without question, school counselors face increasingly complex and formidable challenges in their work with school-age children and their families, including an increased incidence and severity of mental health issues among school children (Auger, 2011; Merikangas, et al., 2011). Given this reality, as well as the privileged and pivotal position that school counselors hold as potential deliverers of front-line mental health services for school-age children and their families (Auger, 2011; Sink, 2005; Walley, Grothaus & Craigen, 2009), it would behoove school counselors to gain and practice competency in this arena. However, a literature review pertinent to the topic of mental health competency (i.e., training, practice, supervision, and professional development) among school counselors reveals a paucity of information published on the topic in recent decades. In this thesis, I review the findings of my textual research pertinent to mental health competency in school counselors, and make the argument that school counselors should be competent in the arena of mental health service delivery and be supported in this role by key stakeholders.
