To mitigate risks of "crashing", leaders---especially new ones---must rapidly and effectively assess the organization culture to determine how it influences employee behavior and to correct course if required.

This inductive research had two purposes: to assess the relative value of different cultural assessment tools and to describe the cultural cohesiveness of a large public organization with multiple stakeholders in disparate locations conducting contingency military operations. The target population included military, civilian and contract employees from a military organization of over 6,300 employees. The research involved the collection, compilation and analysis of both historical and contemporary data using site visits, interviews and survey data.

The research found a significant difference in cultural assessments, dependent on the method employed. The research also found that there were variations in the cultural assessment results, based upon dimensions and subcultures within the organization. Overall, however, the findings did not reveal evidence to support selection of one methodology over another; rather the findings support a multimethod approach to facilitate a comprehensive cultural assessment.
