The researcher conducted a quantitative study to identify several causes of bullying, harassment, and mobbing problems within the U.S. federal work environment. The study was necessary for multiple reasons including to obtain information regarding root causes of workplace bullying, to analyze various tactics engaged by the perpetrator, to look at how these issues affect the organization, and to analyze statistics, which indicate that bullying/harassment exists within the federal government. The Negative Acts Questionnaire, the Workplace Bullying Questionnaire, and the Occupational Stress Questionnaire were used to gather pertinent information from a sample of 57 federal government employees located in various states throughout the U.S. In an effort to document the findings on bullying and harassment, quantitative analyses were conducted. Survey questions were distributed to federal government employees nationwide within the U.S. Questionnaire responses were used to measure the relationship between five independent variables of work environment, weak leadership, competition for advancement, envy, and being different with the dependent variable of bullying. The findings concluded that overall a strong relationship existed between the five variables and workplace bullying. For the five variables, the results indicated that as the work environment improved the presence of bullying decreased. However, as competition for advancement increased, the presence of bullying increased. These analyses illustrated that bullying issues got worse when the work environment became progressively negative as a result of competition.
