In contrast to the well-publicized record of economic growth and income distribution in East Asia, little is known about social mobility, social fluidity in particular, to both local and foreign observers. Mobility research, which deals with inequality in opportunities, is critical for the evaluation of structural inequality in a society. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, the three countries which have been exalted for their "miracle" economies, pose a problem for conventional mobility research in Europe and North America. State-led industrialization, a common feature among the three Asian cases, seriously challenges conventional theories and approaches that assume more or less market-induced industrialization.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a This thesis attempts to synthesize the East-Asian experience of capitalist industrialization and the study of social mobility. The working hypothesis of this analysis is that extensive intervention of the state in civil society for economic development played a central role in creating a pattern of social mobility, social fluidity in particular, in capitalist society in East Asia. The immediate purpose of this analysis is to identify patterns of social fluidity and cross-national differences among Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, and to demonstrate that findings about social fluidity are related to various aspects of modernization which the state has shaped.
520 $a The loglinear model technique is employed to measure social fluidity and a framework for causal analysis is proposed. The major findings are as follows: the capitalist class system which has emerged during rapid industrialization is the most open in Taiwan among the three East-Asian countries. This class openness in Taiwan was generated by both shift and openness in class structure. The openness in class structure is especially important because it is the factor that made society in Taiwan more open than the others. The analysis of mobility flows indicates that life chances of farmers' sons, constituted the most important part of overall social fluidity of each country. The state's intervention in economic or economy-related activities largely determines the life chances of farmers' sons. This study demonstrates that the conventional approach to social fluidity must be seriously qualified when applied to East Asia.
