This thesis project investigates and examines the Chinese art market for contemporary ceramics (1978-2015) made in China. Throughout recent decades, the rapid ascent of contemporary Chinese art in the local market has shocked the world. Contemporary ceramics entered the Chinese Auction House on a large scale starting in 2008, only fifteen years after contemporary paintings were first introduced to Sotheby's Auction House in Hong Kong. The information used in the paper is gathered from extensive case studies and personal interviews. The case studies mainly focus on well-established ceramic artists. The participants of the interviews are accomplished art dealers and dedicated artists. In addition, auction results will be analyzed to support the trends discussed in the paper. The ultimate goal for this paper is to make a prediction of the artistic, economic and social value of contemporary Chinese ceramics in the next ten years.
