Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2016.
As the de facto "state religion" supported and sponsored by forces from the emperors, the imperial court to the scholar-bureaucrats and intellectuals, Taoism and beliefs related to Taoism were widely spread in the Tang Dynasty and were deeply rooted in the cultural life of the Tang people, including the mental world and the literary works of many Tang poets. Though there were different attitudes toward Taoism held by different people, Taoism as a whole, as well as images closely related to Taoism including Taoist canons, deities and historical figures among which the most notable two are respectively the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu and the Immortals and are frequently mentioned in the poetic works of different Tang poets. Moreover, the life of Taoists along with some details of the Taoist practices and belief system and the views on Taoism of non-Taoist poets and intellectuals can also be found throughout the collections of Tang poetry such as the Quan Tang Shi. The paper chooses poems or certain couplets excerpted from long poems which have mentioned some typical images related to Taoism written by different Tang Dynasty poets to analyzed and compare. It also tries to find out the influence of Taoism through demonstrating and analyzing the poems of some representative poets that have connections with Taoism. Through demonstrations, analysis and comparisons, the paper will show a brief image of the different attitudes toward Taoism of the society of that period and the influences of Taoism on the Tang Dynasty.
