The rate of juvenile recidivism is high in the United States. Recidivism is the phenomenon of convicted felons repeating their criminal behaviors after their release from prison. Because of the unusual high rate of juvenile offenders committing crimes after their release from incarceration for their first offense, controversies surrounding the effectiveness of current rehabilitation programs are prevalent. The rate of recidivism implies that the current corrective programs for juvenile offenders are not effective in rehabilitating their behaviors. This study focused on the exploration of the experiences of former juvenile offenders during their incarceration in a Connecticut correctional facility. The intent of the study was to gain insights about the strengths and weaknesses of rehabilitation programs in Connecticut, based on the experiences of former juvenile offenders. A qualitative phenomenological research design was used to explore the experiences of 20 former juvenile offenders. All 20 participants had been incarcerated in a Connecticut facility in the past and have avoided recidivism. Themes and patterns were presented based on the results of the phenomenological analysis of the interviews. The four resultant themes were: (a) The participants benefited from informative and insightful programs taught by knowledgeable and caring facilitators; (b) The only significant hindrances to participant success were the actions of other inmates; (c) Participants learned about the mistakes they made and matured as a result; (d) After incarceration, participants felt they were living improved lives due to their experiences in the rehabilitation program. Overall, the various rehabilitation programs of the Connecticut corrective facility for juvenile offenders are successful in preventing recidivism. This is because most of the participants indicated that they were living better lives and became better people after the incarceration. Recommendations were made pertaining to strengthening the role of facilitators in the rehabilitation process and the engagement of patients in the process. For future research, some of the recommendations included the investigation of specific offenses, validation through a quantitative study, and increasing the sample size.
