Research in other sports and in other fields suggests that women can benefit from gender-specific modifications to instructional techniques, yet male golf professionals working primarily with male golfers developed most golf instructional techniques in use today. Literature from other sports and other fields was examined to highlight why it is important to research golf instruction from a gendered perspective. This was combined with an analysis of the existing literature in the field of golf instruction to show that there is currently a research gap pertaining to gender issues in golf instruction.

Female golf professionals may be in a unique position to help the golf industry understand the instructional needs of female golfers. This exploratory qualitative phenomenological study engaged in open-ended interviews of twelve LPGA teaching professionals to develop a deeper understanding of LPGA teaching professionals' views on gender issues in golf instruction, and on what LPGA professionals perceive to be the instructional needs of female golfers. In particular, the professionals' views on any differences between teaching male and female golfers were examined, as were female golf professionals' words of advice for the golf industry on golf instruction for women.

Most of the professionals believed psychologically-based gender issues in golf instruction to have a greater impact than physically-based gender issues. Many instructors noted the need to address the impact of intimidation on female golfers, as well as the need for a more welcoming and less serious general golf environment. A common theme identified by almost every participant was that the golf industry needs to do a better job of tailoring the lesson and swing technique to the individual golfer, and that instructors need to take the time to get to know their students on a more individual level. Included among the recommendations were: making lessons less technical and more fun, and conducting more on-course playing lessons incorporating concepts such as rules and etiquette.

Suggestions for future research include studies with larger numbers of participants and studies examining the perceptions of female golfers with regard to golf instruction.
