Thesis (D.M.)--University of Phoenix, 2009.
This qualitative, phenomenological doctoral dissertation research study explored the work environment preferences of 20 Generation Y federal contract specialists in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. The research study provided a view of Generation Y through the lived experiences of the participants who worked in the federal procurement workplace. Findings from the research study revealed eight themes with multiple sub-themes. The eight themes were (a) safety/security, (b) attracting Generation Y, (c) increasing self-esteem, (d) retaining Generation Y, (e) social interaction, (f) feeling of accomplishment, (g) physical facilities, (h) reaching full potential. The factors contributing to attracting Generation Y federal contract specialists to the workplace were (a) pay/benefits, (b) advertising/marketing, (c) flexibility/quality of work life, and (d) hiring process. The factors contributing to retaining Generation Y were (a) learning environment/challenges, (b) flexibility/work-life-balance, (c) pay/benefits/awards, (d) being heard/creativity, and (e) technology/right tools. The knowledge and recommendations that resulted from the study could assist in resolving the shortage of contract specialists in the federal procurement workforce of those organizations who had participants in the study.
