The research study presented here used a psychobiological approach to examine, in a clinical sample of severely emotionally disturbed youth, whether sleep quality was associated with attachment styles and emotional regulation. Specifically, this study posed two questions. First, whether there was a relationship between sleep quality and emotional regulation defined as depression, anxiety, or aggression. Second, if there were a relationship between sleep quality and three attachment styles, ambivalent attachment, avoidant attachment, and secure attachment. The literature review examined existing research on infant development that suggests that a relationship exists between sleep, insecure attachment, and emotional regulation difficulties. This study extends this research beyond infancy to adolescence and to a population of youth with existing psychopathology. The results of this study indicated that a significant relationship exists between sleep quality and attachment style and therefore provided support for previous research in this area and extended those results to adolescents with severe emotional disturbance. A significant relationship however was not found between sleep quality and emotional regulation. Results are discussed in terms of methodological issues and recommendations for further study.
