Numerous studies have improved understanding of the relationships among health outcomes, weight status and social support in children. Promoting social support in the context of pediatric intervention could lead to improved health-related quality of life. It has been well documented that social support is positively related to the global social-emotional adjustment of children and adolescents, contributing to psychological health.

More evidence was needed to link social support theory and the role of perception in the context of childhood obesity. The reliability and validity of a newly developed measure of targeted social support for healthy behaviors were evaluated. The results of this study indicate that the CASSS-HB, a new measure of social support for healthy behaviors from five sources show preliminary evidence of reliability and validity as a measure of targeted social support for healthy behaviors in children. Preliminary findings suggested that the CASSS-HB may supplement the CASSS, a well-established measure of general social support. It was also found that weight status is significantly related to perceptions of body size dissatisfaction in children. Targeted social support for healthy behaviors from parents was also significantly related to body size dissatisfaction for males. As such, perceptions of targeted social support and body size dissatisfaction are important aspects to assess when addressing childhood obesity. This research offers valuable evidence about these relationships to inform future school-based intervention development to address childhood obesity, suggesting that the inclusion of the assessment of general and targeted social support and body size dissatisfaction at an early age is an essential component to childhood obesity research and intervention development. These findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.
