This dissertation consists of three essays. The first seeks to determine if key domains of life satisfaction (DLS) -- income, health, family relationships, and work -- cluster into classes and whether the probability of belonging to any of these classes correlates with the Big Five personality traits. Using latent class analysis and, subsequently, a multinomial logit regression, I find that (1) neurotics tend to belong to a class of individuals who tend to be unsatisfied across all DLS whether they are economically well-off or not, (2) individuals with high levels of extraversion tend to belong to a class of individuals who tend to be satisfied across these DLS whether they are well-off or not, and (3) going from low to high levels of consciousness shifts the high probability of belonging to a class of being non well-off and unsatisfied across all DLS to a high probability of belonging to a class of being economically well-off and satisfied across all DLS. The second essay seeks to identify genetic alleles in individuals identified as innovative entrepreneurs (IEs). IEs were defined as individuals who have founded businesses and have patents. Using logistic, negative binomial, and ordered logistic regressions, I find no clear differences between non-IEs and IEs with respect to carrying the 7R+ allele of the DRD4 Exon III gene. However, I find top-level IEs are much less likely than bottom-level IEs to not carry the 7R+ allele. The third essay examines a mechanism to explain why the infant mortality rate (IMR) fluctuates procyclically in the United States. I hypothesize that part of this association is explained by access to legalized abortion. Using state- and time-fixed effects models (1973-1982), I find that the effect of unemployment on IMR is moderated by the difficulty that women face in having an abortion. There is a negative and statistically significant effect of unemployment on IMR in states where it is difficult to get an abortion, while this effect is weak and insignificant in states where it is less difficult to get an abortion.
