Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2014.
This paper explores the memories that Mexican-Americans had of the exploitations, discrimination, and racism that took place in twentieth century, California. Through use of interviews, primary and secondary sources, I will analyze why Mexican-Americans had compassion towards Mexican migrants despite differences in citizenship and experience. My study reveals that this compassion stemmed from recognizing that Mexican migrants were used as cheap labor, that they were exploited, that the United States took Mexico's land, and that Mexicans and Mexican-Americans have a common identity. As a result, Mexican-Americans began to join organizations to help Mexican migrants toward the end of the twentieth century. Those interviewed recognized that the United States had/has an addiction to cheap labor. As a result of these policies and practices that exploited the Mexican migrant laborer, some Mexican-Americans became Chicano activists.
