Since 2002, Nigeria has grappled with Boko Haram insurgency which has claimed not less than 10,000 lives and destroyed property worth millions of dollars. Available studies on Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria have concentrated on internal causes of the crisis, almost to a total exclusion of external occasions. The ones which deal with external factors, even though tangentially, have not covered the role of clash of civilizations between Islam and the West. This study examined the role of global Islamic Resurgence, characteristic of the post-Cold War era, in the emergence of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria and the place of Nigeria within this global Islamic upsurge.

The study relied essentially on secondary sources for its analysis. Books and journal articles published in the area of study were utilized for this historical reconstruction. These were augmented by newspaper publications and other forms of news reports. Various methods and approaches were used in the interpretation of these sources. The power shift from the north to the south since 1999 has constituted a causus belli among the northern oligarchy which has sustained its ranks through the national treasury. The poverty in northern part of Nigeria has reached record level, creating candidates for insurgency and terrorism. Illiteracy is at the highest level in Nigeria as forty per cent of Nigerian children aged 6-11 do not attend primary school, with the northern region recording the lowest school attendance rate in the country. The desertification of the Sahara has not only helped to proletarianize the people of north eastern Nigeria, but has helped radicalized them. Islamic insurgents across the globe share some level of solidarity amongst themselves, what has been described as "civilizational rallying".

Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria is mainly a product of the clash of civilizations between Islam and the West. Thus, the global Islamic Resurgence, characteristic of the post-Cold War period, is one of the major factors driving Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, coupled with socio-economic and political factors.
