This dissertation explores the acquisition of Japanese passives. In particular, it deals with the issue of when and how so called direct passives are acquired by Japanese children. To provide some answers, three experiments were conducted, each of which approaches passive acquisition from a different angle.

This dissertation explores the acquisition of Japanese passives. In particular, it deals with the issue of when and how so called direct passives are acquired by Japanese children. To provide some answers, three experiments were conducted, each of which approaches passive acquisition from a different angle.

Experiment 1 involves a comprehension test and asks whether the passive morpheme -(r) are- and the particle ni are used as a cue to the passive interpretations. The results suggest that -(r) are- and ni are equally used as passive cues at an early stage of development while -( r) are- is primarily used at a later stage.

Experiment 2 examines children's knowledge of particles used in passives. The results showed that two-thirds of the 4-year-olds and some of the 3-year-olds interpreted passives relatively well when given contexts. On the other hand, linguistically less advanced children were inclined to interpret case-marked NPs according to the basic patient-agent order of passives or to interpret the first case-marked NP as an agent.

Experiment 3 investigates children's motivation to use the passive. In this experiment the younger children were more likely to use passives when describing events involving a negatively affected patient. On the other hand, the older children's choice of passives was not limited to such particular situations. Moreover, they were more likely to use the benefactive construction if the patient is not negatively affected.

With these results, it is suggested that children's learning of Japanese passives begins quite early, but the acquisition takes place gradually in smallish steps. An initial step takes place at about age 3. Children's attentiveness to the passive morpheme is typical of this stage. The morpheme comes to be used as a passive cue and associated with the basic patient-agent word order of passives. The next step takes place around age 4. This stage is characterized by a remarkable expansion of children's knowledge of case particles. The third step is identified with older children's attempts to expand the possible range of semantic/pragmatic domains for the application of passives.
