Thesis (Ph.D.)--Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, 2014.
This qualitative exploratory study used the heuristic research method to explore the process of integrating eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) with transpersonal psychotherapy in healing symptoms relating to complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), which can be found in the disorders of extreme stress not otherwise specified (DESNOS) category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Five licensed psychotherapists (two psychologists, one social worker, one marriage and family counselor, and one professional counselor) were recruited to explore the experience of the clinician utilizing the integration of EMDR and transpersonal psychotherapy in healing complex trauma, and clinicians' observations of its impact on clients' transformation within the clinical setting. Five participants engaged in a set of two individual interviews. Data consists of participants' reports of professional experiences and observation of clients' transformation, and researcher's journaling as related to the dissertation research topic. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze data. Depictions, narrative reporting of common themes, and creative synthesis were created. Upon completion, the integration of EMDR and transpersonal psychotherapy manifested as an essential integrative approach in healing the dissociation caused by complex trauma. The transpersonal approach to EMDR in healing complex trauma was demonstrated to strengthen the resourcing stage of EMDR, which was interwoven throughout the entire EMDR process. The healing process as reported in therapists' reflections ranged from symptom alleviation to shifts in the clients' relationship with their traumatic experiences, which resulted in a less fragmented core personality structure.
