Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Rochester, 2014.
Musical development occurs in the context of specific sociocultural environments. The musical preferences, knowledge, and skills people acquire generally reflect those of their social groups. People construct their individual musical practices and beliefs about music through social interaction with those around them. Researchers have demonstrated that individuals' social partners (e.g., parents, teachers, and peers) influence and shape the course of their musical development in a variety of ways; however, most existing studies focus on either the exclusive influence of one type of social partner (e.g., parents), or on the development of musicians within one specific genre of music (e.g., classical music). Thus, we lack a comprehensive understanding of how social relationships influence musical development.

In this study, I investigated the influence of multiple social partners on the development of young musicians who were engaged in the practices of diverse musical genres. Participants in this study were five young musicians between the ages of 16 and 18 and three to four of their most musically influential social partners. Five genres, selected for their diversity and presence in the local community, were represented: classical music, hip-hop, rock, musical theatre, and jazz. I used a qualitative approach to social network analysis to explore the following two research questions: (1) How do young musicians' social relationships influence the course of their musical development? (2) How are understandings about music transmitted through social networks? Data gathered in interviews and through participant-observation were analyzed using a grounded theory approach, to generate a theoretical explanation of these phenomena.

My analysis focused primarily on how resources flow through participants' social networks. I identified a wide variety of musically significant resources participants accessed through their network connections. Certain relationship types were typically associated with the provision of specific resources; however, the proportions of resources provided by each relationship type varied dramatically for each participant. School music programs and other institutions strongly supported the musical development of the classical, musical theatre, and jazz musicians, through the provision of musically significant resources. In contrast, these formal structures were not available to the rock and hip-hop musicians, who typically accessed musical resources online and through friends and family. My analysis addressed how this study's participants exercised their personal agency to use and pursue musically valuable resources. Furthermore, I examined how chance shaped the musical development of participants. Finally, I offered a theoretical perspective on how developmental trajectories in music are constructed in social contexts.
