Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014.
Art museums have been recognized for their collections but also for their buildings. For the past two decades, American art museums have succumbed to the phenomenon of hiring star-architects to design innovative expansions, renovations or new constructions that epitomize their identities. Such iconic architecture has not only enlivened museums and their programs but has also raised public interest regarding visual arts. It has become a part of the museum atmosphere and has consequently enhanced the public's experience. By exploring the historical context of museum architecture that has launched such fascination, the significance of form and function correlations in design, and the art museum experience, through various examples, this thesis discusses the impact that museum architecture has on the institution and the public experience in the United States.
