The subject of this dissertation focuses on constructing porous chiral coverage domains and active domains with stereoelectronical control into complex metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); and studying their roles as specific, selective receptors, and precisely positioned molecular machinery modules in well-defined structures.

This goal is accomplished by defining three important architectural porous domains in MOFs (sorting domain, coverage domain, and active domain) by their interaction forces with incoming guests. First, the concept of a coverage domain is illustrated by chiral MOF-223 and MOF-224, in which enantiopure struts are connected with inorganic building blocks. MOF-223 shows a porous chiral coverage domain, demonstrated by gas adsorption characterization with a Langmuir surface area of 1,050 m2g-1.

A new type of porous architectural domain with stereoelectronic control---the active domain---is demonstrated by the synthesis of a series of complex MOF structures containing macrocyclic polyethers. Macrocyclic polyethers act as recognition modules in these crystalline primitive cubic frameworks that engage in specific binding in a way not observed in passive, open reticulated geometries. MOF-1001 is capable of docking paraquat dication guests within the macrocycles in a stereoelectronically controlled fashion. This act of specific complexation yields quantitatively the corresponding MOF1001 pseudorotaxanes, as confirmed by x-ray diffraction and by solid- and solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies performed on MOF-1001, its pseudorotaxanes, and their molecular strut precursors.

Additionally, active domains are further exemplified in the crystal structures of MOF-1011 and MOF-1012, in which donor-acceptor catenane units become integrated, leading to high densities of these molecular machinery modules with precise locations and orientations. MOF-1011 and MOF-1012 demonstrate the first step towards incorporating switchable active domains into MOF structures. Incorporating dynamic behavior into robust crystalline scaffolds in a highly controllable fashion would achieve the desired complexity.
