As the older adult population increases, their health care needs are expanding at a high rate. Wellness promotion for older adults is becoming a vital strategy to reduce this demand. Current research has established the importance of incorporating spirituality into wellness promotion. The problem with this incorporation concerns a lack of consistency in the ways that spirituality has been defined. To clarify the notions of spirituality, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the ways that older adults apply spirituality in their wellness practices. Holistic theory provided the frame of reference for the information collected, while gerotranscendence theory provided a reflective backdrop for examining the spiritual perspective of older adults. Interviews were conducted with 12 participants and then analyzed according to the transcendental phenomenology method, which generated a detailed description of the phenomenon being studied. The primary theme of the results was that participants showed a belief in a higher being or spiritual realm. The results also confirmed that participants incorporated spirituality into their wellness practices within a holistic perspective. Understanding this experience offers researchers an opportunity to build a more consistent approach to defining spirituality when applied to wellness. The potential for positive social change can be found in new directions for future research and program development. Moreover, incorporating spirituality into wellness promotion models has the potential to increase the quality of life in older age due to an improved outlook on age-related health issues and to decrease health care costs due to better management of chronic disease.
