Little research exists that addresses how mindfulness develops from youth into adulthood. Most of the literature focuses on the secular, clinical, and individual practice of mindfulness in adults. Few studies focus on the developmental, spiritual, and relational aspects of this practice. This dissertation aimed to fill a gap in the literature. Six young adult women (ages 18-26) who were introduced to Buddhist mindfulness in their youth were interviewed about their development of mindfulness and the impact it had on relational resilience. Participants were White/Caucasian, middle-class women who practiced Westernized versions of Buddhist mindfulness.

A qualitative, narrative methodology was used to encourage nuanced and unique retellings of participants' stories. Semistructured interviews engaged participants in reflecting on relationships, spiritual touchstones, turning points, and epiphanies along their journeys. They described episodes when mindfulness positively or negatively impacted their "capacity to move back into growth fostering connections following an acute disconnection or in times of stress" (Jordan, 1992, p. 82).

The findings of this study highlighted the positive impact of Buddhist mindfulness on young women's relational resilience. The results supported feminist and social constructionist literature that emphasize the relational nature of women's psycho-spiritual development. The narratives showed the interwoven individual and collective influences on participants' processes, stressing the strengths and pitfalls of practicing mindfulness in the West.

The results distilled common themes supporting previous findings that mindfulness lowers emotional reactivity and anxiety, as well as fosters emotional attunement and self-regulation. These findings add to the literature by highlighting the impact of mindfulness on relational resilience and proposing a "double helix" model featuring both intrapersonal and interpersonal themes that include: (a) the key of acceptance for one's self and the other, (b) the importance of integrating mindfulness into various aspects of one's life, (c) the significance of community and (d) the significance of spirituality on one's practice.

Clinical implications and further research on the impact of mindfulness on relational resilience were explored. Mindfulness program recommendations that consider the specific psycho-spiritual needs of young women were proposed. Finally, a relational mindfulness model that takes into account one's spiritual or existential worldview was proposed.
