Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2014.
On average, older adults are living longer lives. Successful aging and cognition in older adulthood have been studied separately, but what is their combined role in allowing of older adults to age successfully? The contemporary literature regarding successful aging definitions, older adults perceptions of successful aging, and cognitive functioning in older adults is reviewed. The current study investigates the relationships between multiply measured cognitive abilities and older adults' self-ratings of the degree to which they think they are aging successfully. The relationship between measured cognitive abilities and objective measures of successful aging (e.g., physical health, social engagement, and mental health) are evaluated, with additional analyses measuring the realtionship between components of successful aging and subjective successful aging rating.
