Trust is an important part of relationships in early child care centers and its establishment relies on the interactions between directors, families, and teachers. Yet, the way trust is built and perceived by directors and families is often overlooked because it is assumed directors understand how to foster trusting relationships. As a result, there is a lack of research in leadership in early childhood care and education that focuses on the director's influence on trust in early child care centers and how trust is perceived by families. This study is important because directors who understand how to build trusting relationships with families may improve the effectiveness and productivity of their child care center and as a result improve the quality of care children receive. This study will discuss findings from a multi-site case study which examined Black families' and directors' perspectives of trust in early child care centers. The study will also discuss how Black families of different social classes, such as poor, working class, and middle class, differ in their perceptions of trust. Finally, this study will provide implications for how directors may foster trusting relationships in early child care centers with families and, most importantly, the need to emphasize building trusting relationships as a component of quality care for children and families.
