Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Wright Institute, 2013.
This program evaluation explores the need for mental health services at a San Francisco, California health agency, the Women's Community Clinic (WCC), and suggests important considerations related to how the WCC might develop these services. The WCC is a nonprofit clinic that provides free pregnancy testing, Pap tests, HIV testing, breast exams, general medical screenings, and related services to those without insurance, with inadequate insurance, or those who would benefit from service confidentiality. In terms of population served, the WCC provides care to women in the San Francisco Bay Area, more specifically, transgender and female identified individuals who are at least 12 years old. Through a partnership with the Wright Institute's Integrated Health Psychology Training Program, the researcher provided mental health services to WCC clients for the academic training year 2010 - 2011. The WCC's provision of mental health services was limited to this brief time period.

This study used a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods to assist the WCC to conceptualize the type of integrative mental health services that might be most appropriate for them to offer and lay the groundwork as the WCC pursues long-term, sustainable behavioral and mental health services for their clients. Various stakeholders and data collection methods were used. More specifically, staff members, including the Executive Director, Clinic Director, and other administrators, were consulted throughout the research process. Focus groups were conducted with staff members and volunteers. Furthermore, WCC client's perspectives were collected via a survey containing closed and open-ended questions. Additionally, archival data from the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), which was collected by the researcher in 2010 and 2011, was used to ascertain client distress levels and also to determine how best to measure client distress in ongoing WCC program evaluation.

This dissertation also includes a discussion of the results of each of these methods and recommendations for how the WCC might approach the creation of sustainable integrative mental health services and what key issues to prioritize in this process. Additionally, limitations and areas for further research are outlined.
