This study investigated the relationship between mindfulness meditation, degree of reported mindfulness, and self-actualization. One hundred and sixty-seven participants (mean age = 40.7 years, SD = 13) completed a demographic information form, the mindful attention awareness scale (MAAS), and the personal orientation inventory (POI). Correlational and ANOVA analyses were conducted to test hypotheses. Results validated research predictions by showing that advanced mindfulness meditation practitioners scored significantly higher than nonpractitioners on 5 of the 12 POI scales: inner-directed (p = .001), existentiality (p < .0005), spontaneity (p = .03), synergy (p = .01), and capacity for intimate contact (p = .003). Results partially supported predictions that mindfulness meditation practitioners with more experience would score higher than practitioners with less experience; this was the case on 2 of the 12 POI scales, inner directed (p = .03) and synergy (p = .01). Results validated predictions in that advanced mindfulness practitioners scored significantly higher on the MAAS than beginner practitioners (p = .02) and nonpractitioners (p < .01); intermediate practitioners scored significantly higher on the MAAS than nonpractitioners (p = .01); and correlational analyses revealed a positive correlation between MAAS scores and nine of the 10 POI scales (p < .01). These findings support previous research. Overall, the study supports the use of mindfulness meditation as a method of increasing mindful attention and awareness, and as a method of pursuing self-actualization. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.
