Thesis (M.A.)--Indiana University, 2013.
The ultimate goal of this thesis is to analyze and document the Dagara funeral music and dirge from a socio-political context. Funerals are important social rituals and serve as a place of public discourse through which both musicians and dirge singers can express and communicate their feelings about social concerns confronting the daily lives of the ordinary people. Because of their political themes, funeral music and dirge are considered by the Dagara as the most important form of public discourse. This thesis explores the performance aspects of this musical complex, drawing out the textual interpretations as well as the political implications of Dagara funeral music and dirge.
