This systematic literature review was conducted to identify the most effective occupational therapy intervention that can be used to aid older adults to successfully age in place. Aging in place is defined as using services to continue to live safely and independently in one's home, and continuing to participate in community and family activities as a person ages. Four out of five Americans over the age of 45 currently wish to remain in their homes as they grow older (Bayer & Harper, 2000). The desire for adults to remain in their homes suggests a need for occupational therapy interventions directed towards aging in place. The results of this review identify the use of an integrated team including an occupational therapist to provide client-centered interventions. The most frequently used client-centered intervention identified in the literature for older adults in the United States was home modification.
