Metric properties of objects and surfaces seen from a single viewing perspective have been repeatedly shown to be unreliably judged by observers (Perotti, Todd, Lappin and Phillips, 1998, Norman & Todd, 1996). It has been suggested that this is due to affine transformations governing perceptual extraction of metric features from objects in the environment. Bingham and Lind (2008) found that this problem can be solved if change of viewing perspective by at least 45° is allowed. Follow up studies were carried out to examine this phenomenon and confirmed that perspective change below 45° does not improve metric shape perception, and that rate of change does not affect it (Lind, Lee, Mazanowski, Kountouriotis and Bingham, 2014, Experiments 1 and 2). Present study examined how perspective changes above 45° and variations in target object's slant and symmetry influence accurate perception of metric shape. Observers were asked to judge depth-to-width aspect ratios of rotating polyhedrons displayed on a screen. It was found that accuracy of judgments does not increase when higher degrees of rotation (55°--75°) are allowed, and that neither slant nor asymmetry of target objects affects metric shape perception. Special properties of 45° perspective change and potential avenues for future research were discussed.
