Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2013.
Split scope occurs when the negation and indefinite take scope independently of one another. This has been documented in the West-Germanic languages German, Dutch, and English. I apply Zeijlstra (2011)'s framework to the following languages: Azerbaijani, Czech, Macedonian Albanian, Persian, Polish, and Turkish. I have found that while most languages fit nicely within the previous framework, some occurrences of split scope cannot be accounted for within the parameters laid out for scope splitting in West-Germanic languages. I provide a typology of the languages researched using data elicited from native speakers and discussing the morphological structures of the sentences in each language. I find that even agglutinating languages also allow for split scope, a finding that points to split scope as a universal property of language.
