Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2014.
Societal pressures and learned behaviors sometimes lead individuals toward the pursuit of perfection at all costs, in all different areas of life. The relentless, endless search for perfection, almost to the point of addiction, can hinder personal progress, delay psychological growth, and derail a person from his or her path to individuation. The author suggests that a plan B, one that fosters acceptance of imperfections and shadow integration, might be the shortest, most holistic, and efficient path to individuation. Through an extensive literature review and a heuristic approach, followed by an account of the author's own personal struggle with perfectionism, this paper explores ways in which one can pursue individuation by overcoming perfectionism, and at the same time maintain one's sense of identity and not feel out of control.
