Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2014.
This research investigated the use of imagery and the motivation of competitive figure skaters. Forty-two figure skaters, aged 14-25 (M= 17.71 years) were asked to describe their imagery use via The Sport Imagery Questionnaire, and their motivation levels were assessed using The Sport Motivation Scale. Responses were analyzed for correlations between imagery use and motivation levels, and for mean differences based on skating level, gender and discipline. The results indicate significant relationships between several components of the imagery and motivation subscales, and significant differences were found between the imagery use of males and females as well as between the individual skaters' group and those who skate with a partner. Significant differences were revealed in the motivation responses according to skating level, gender and discipline. The results of this thesis support further examination into these constructs, a better understanding of which may aid in the development of more specialized training programs for competitive figure skaters in the future.
