Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a traumatizing experience that increases the likelihood of becoming sexually victimized in adulthood. Research highlights several different mechanisms to explain the observed relationship between CSA and sexual revictimization, such as PTSD and dissociation, alcohol and substance abuse, and decreased risk recognition.

This study explored the relationship between women's victimization history and their deployment of rape avoidance behaviors in adulthood. Participants consisted of 270 women between the ages of 18 and 66. Measures assessing CSA history, adult sexual assault (ASA) history, use of rape avoidance behaviors as well as PTSD symptomology, alcohol abuse, and risk recognition abilities were administered in an online format. The prediction that CSA and childhood physical abuse (CPA) history would be associated with reduced deployment of rape avoidance behaviors compared to non-victims and adult sexual assault (ASA)-only victims was not supported. Results indicated that women with no abuse history deploy rape avoidance behaviors more frequently than women with both ASA-only and CSA histories, however, no differences were found between women with ASA-only history and women with CSA history. Furthermore, the prediction that the relationship between CSA and mean frequency of rape avoidance behavior use is moderated by alcohol abuse and PTSD symptomology, and mediated by risk recognition abilities was also unsupported.
