Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2014.
Conflict between family members, either between parents or between a parent and child, may influence a child's academic outcomes. However, among college students' research has demonstrated that conflict either has a negative or little influence on academic performance. The current study examined a possible third variable, resilience, which may moderate the relationship between family conflict and academic performance. Ethnic group variations in this relationship also were examined. Data were collected from a diverse sample of college students enrolled in a large public university in Southern California. Students who participated in this study were enrolled in introductory psychology classes and were asked to participate in an online survey. Additionally, to examine differences in academic performance, students' grade point averages (GPA) were collected from the university's Admission and Records office. Results partially supported the hypotheses. Family conflict negatively was negatively related to academic performance; however, no relationship was found between resilience and college students' GPA.
