Stereotypes about appearance play a major role in how African Americans view themselves. This stems from the extensive history of racism due to slavery between the 16th and 19th centuries in the United States. The accepted image of beauty and attractiveness in African American culture is often based on the physical features of European Americans (e.g. light skin color, blonde hair color, and blue eye color). This unattainable image makes it difficult for African Americans to feel confident and have high self-esteem about their ethnic features. In addition, many African Americans choose to bleach their skin or straighten their "kinky" (curly, tangled) hair in order to achieve the European image of beauty. The cognitive process of having light skin equates to positive stereotypes of being successful, educated, and a member of the social elite, while having darker skin often equates to more discrimination and leads to negative stereotypes such as being unattractive, poor, uneducated, and a criminal.
