There are four steps in the recruiting process of reviewing the cover letter and resume, an initial phone call, and the face-to-face interview. The recruiters and hiring managers have selection factors which choose a winning applicant. The problem for an applicant who applies for a position as a front desk agent is not being considered winning applicant. Several scholarly articles have been written about the four steps in the recruiting process, but few have examined the selection factors that recruiters and hiring managers seek in the four steps of the recruiting processes. The purpose of this study is to understand what can be learned from recruiters and hiring managers in the hiring processes where they choose a winning applicant for an employment position such as the front desk agent by filling that gap in the scholarly literature. The research question for this qualitative multiple-case study was, What can be learned from recruiters and hiring managers regarding the factors that influence their decisions in the recruiting process to select an applicant? The researcher purposely selected participants who were recruiters and hiring managers in the hotel hospitality industry. The findings revealed that each of the four steps in the recruiting processes have identified selection factors that the recruiters and hiring managers seek in choosing the winning applicant, even though the winning applicant is not chosen until the face-to-face interview is completed. Future studies into other industries of inquiring the selection factors the recruiter and hiring manager seek would benefit that particular industry as well as the job seekers who are applying for a position.
