To pursue this study, approval was sought from the Director of the Missouri Division of Workers' Compensation to examine the impact of 2005 statutory changes to the Missouri Workers' Compensation Act ("Act") on dispositions for self-represented injured workers in Missouri. A secondary data analysis was conducted to compare the number of hand injury dispositions before August 28, 2005 to the proportion of hand injury dispositions after August 27, 2005. The goal was to determine if the number of dispositions changed and if so, by how much. The main research question examined was: What is the overall effect of statutory changes in 2005 on settlements reached for self-represented injured workers?

520 $a The population studied was the total number of hand injury cases for self-represented injured workers contained in the Missouri Division of Workers' Compensation ("Division") computer data base, with a settlement in the Division files by December 9, 2011. The unit of analysis included cases for self-represented injured workers with hand injuries which resolved for a date of injury between August 28, 2000 (five years before the law change) and August 27, 2010 (five years after the law change). The data provided a comparison between settlement dispositions for 260.5 weeks before and after the change in the law.
