The objective of this thesis is to evaluate and develop an active suspension system and to compare it to a passive system. The mathematical modeling for a quarter-car passive suspension system is provided in order to analyze the responses associated with random road profile.

For this purpose, a mathematical model for an active suspension system that is equipped with an electromagnetic actuator, accelerometer, and an LQG controller is studied. The random road profile, which is the input to the active suspension system, is generated from a white noise signal using a filter. Furthermore, mathematical equations to evaluate the energy required for the operation of the above modeled suspension systems are presented.

The simulations are carried out on MATLAB/SimulinkRTM. Also, a new method of simulation using Simscape toolbox is applied. Finally, the results of the simulation are used to find the optimum characteristics for an active suspension system. The comparison of the results of simulations with those presented in the literature and a typical passive system with comparable mass, stiffness, and damping characteristics shows a significant improvement. Specifically, the vertical displacement of the sprung mass has been reduced by 87.65% and the vertical acceleration by 73.34% when the performance of the active system is compared with the passive system.
