Thesis (M.B.A.)--University of New Brunswick (Canada), 2012.
During financial crises, the profitability of businesses often tends to be eroded. Managements, therefore, aim to minimize inefficiencies in the operations of their business organizations. This study analyzes operating and profit efficiency of 24 leading commercial banks from five countries, before and after the 2008 financial crisis. In consonance with the academic literature, we have used non-parametric statistical methodology for assessing these two efficiency measures. The results suggest that for the most part there are no significant differences in efficiency scores before and after the 2008 financial crisis. We have found that both sets of efficiency scores are high which limits the scope for any further efficiency improvements of the sampled banks either in terms of operations or profitability. In addition, our results indicate that some banks from Canada, Ireland and the United States experienced technological changes during the study period. An examination of financial ratios and other performance measures reveal that all banks increased their Tier 1 capital and loan loss provisions in the post-crisis period. Most banks also experienced higher net interest margins and returns on equity (ROE) in the post-crisis period.
