Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2013.
Economic inequality in the United States is a condition that ignites vast debate. Wage labor plays a significant role and from a historical perspective reveals the dynamics of race and gender inequality. Research and statistical evidence attempt to hone in on root causes and potential methods to reduce the increasing wealth gap in the United States; however, when dissected by racial lines, other complex factors contribute to economic inequality that are not easily attributed to a free market enterprise system, globalization or other purely economic explanations. I will examine labor inequality and inequality of opportunity from a historical perspective as well as expose what present-day barriers influence upward economic mobility for many minorities. The complex nature of discrimination in America is even more relevant as other factors are analyzed that reveal inequality in education, opportunity and labor that perpetuate stagnant economic mobility for African Americans and other minorities.
