Thesis (M.H.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2013.
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has emerged as a new technique for cancer patients to manage symptoms, relieve pain, and reduce stress. A wide range of techniques can be considered CAM therapies, and this study focused on three of them: mind-body techniques, nutritional supplements, and exercise. This study also focused on disclosure of CAM usage to providers, insurance coverage, and the level of pain or discomfort that the patient feels.

This study was conducted using data from California Health Interview Survey's 2001 Adult Follow-back study, entitled Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire. Relationships between (a) pain and mind-body CAM therapies, (b) insurance coverage and exercise, (c) disclosure of the use of CAM therapies with provider, and (d) nutritional supplements and pain were investigated. All tests produced inconclusive results, which may be due to the broadness of the variables used and the subjectivity of reporting one's own level of pain.
