How well we perceive a visual stimulus depends on where its image strikes the retina. Most people have an intuitive sense of this, acting with the knowledge that their vision is worse in the periphery. For example, they move their eyes to keep the stimulus centered on the fovea when reading or carrying out other visual tasks that require fine discrimination. But perceptual performance does not depend solely on how eccentric the stimulus is (i.e., the distance of the stimulus from the central fixation point); it also greatly depends on the particular location at a given eccentricity. Thus, visual field position places a critical constraint on our perceptual capabilities. Additional factors, such as attention, can further modulate performance across the visual field. Here, we examine the effects of attention on performance and appearance across the visual field. Furthermore, we characterize how performance varies as function of visual field position, stressing the factors responsible for limiting performance. We find that visual field position constrains performance, that attention can help to overcome those limitations, and that attentional modulation alters our experience of the visual world.
