Thesis (Ph.D.)--Brandeis University, 2012.
Traditional methods of investigating the visual system have made use of very simple stimuli and controlled tasks that are considerably less complex than the conditions typically encountered during natural visual experience. Thus it is still unknown how the brain encodes basic visual attributes in the presence of contextual information, complex scene statistics, and top-down prior knowledge about a stimulus. I characterize the sensitivity of the human visual system to orientation, position and motion by obtaining psychophysical measurements with stimuli that approximate the complexity of natural input, and investigate a range of potential features that can be used during object perception. The results of these measures provide evidence that, in contrast to the classical view, the visual system encodes even the simplest attributes by continuously combining sensory information with expectations derived from earlier experience.
