The purpose was to investigate the effects of a wrap-around, hinged, prophylactic knee brace on lower extremity joint ranges of motion, joint moments, or vertical ground reaction forces during a drop landing task. Fifteen healthy subjects (9 females, 6 males) performed five box drop landings while wearing a hinged, wraparound knee brace on their dominant leg and five landings with no brace. Bilateral hip, knee, and ankle ranges of motion in the sagittal plane were calculated. Bilateral sagittal plane hip moments, sagittal and frontal plane knee moments, and vertical ground reactions forces were also calculated. Results revealed bilateral knee and hip ranges of motion were significantly decreased in the braced conditions. Non-dominant ankle range of motion was also significantly decreased in the braced condition. Peak external knee flexion moments were increased in the braced condition. In conclusion, a hinged prophylactic knee brace resulted in bilateral kinematic and kinetic changes of the lower extremities. These findings suggest an increased load on the braced knee, which may be detrimental to an individual with an existing knee injury.
