The current study investigated and measured the actual parent and child's acculturation gap and its impact on Korean American adolescents' relationship with their parents and their psychological well-being. Despite the rapid increase of this unique population and recognition that they have cultural adjustment issues, there is a dearth of literature on the acculturation and mental health issues of Korean Americans, particularly of the youth. This study, hence, sought to address this need of literature and increase the awareness of Korean American adolescents and their psychological well-being and inform relevant culturally appropriate interventions for them.

A total of 208 Korean American child and parent dyads participated in the study and completed the following questionnaires: Asian American Multidimensional Acculturation Scale (AAMAS; Chung, Kim, & Abreu, 2004), Asian Values Scale-Revised (AVS-R; B.S.K. Kim & Hong, 2004), Asian American Family Conflict Scale (FCS; R.M. Lee et al., 2000), and Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale Second Edition (RADS-2; Reynolds, 2002), which includes four subscales (dysphoric mood, anhedonia/negative affect, negative self-evaluation, and somatic complaints) and a depression total score.

An examination of the participants' characteristics indicated that the sample includes junior high and high school students. In consideration of the developmental differences that exist between students in junior high and high school, the analyses were separately examined for these two groups. Results for the junior high students indicated that there were no significant findings between acculturation gap and family conflict. However, it was found that acculturation gap is a significant predictor and positively related to depression, dysphoric mood, anhedonia/negative affect, and negative self-evaluation but not to somatic complaints. Results for the high school students indicated that acculturation gap is a significant predictor and positively related to parent-reported family conflict. Additionally, it was found that enculturation gap is a significant predictor and is positively related to anhedonia/negative affect. It is noted that due to low reliability of AVS-R, the present study was not able to examine the hypothesis related to values acculturation gap. Limitations and implications for research, counseling, and education and policy are discussed.
